Cantaloupe Skunk (Skunk#1 Super Sativa Seed Club)
The Original Skunk#1 from the Super Sativa Seed Club (SSSC) is one of the most iconic and influential cannabis strains in history, often credited with revolutionizing modern breeding and cultivation practices. Developed in the 1970s by Sam the Skunkman (real name David Watson) through his Sacred Seeds collective in California, it was brought to the Netherlands in the early 1980s, where it became a cornerstone of SSSC's early catalog. This strain marked a shift from traditional fluffy sativa buds to denser, more potent hybrids, influencing countless varieties still grown today. Skunk#1 is a mostly sativa hybrid derived from a cross of Afghani (indica), Colombian Gold (sativa), and Thai (sativa) landraces, stabilized through scientific selection for high THC content (around 15% as measured by early gas chromatography) It features a high calyx-to-leaf ratio, making it easier to trim, and produces large, long, dense buds with a notoriously pungent "skunky" aroma—sweet, earthy, and musky. Skunk#1 transformed the Dutch cannabis scene in the 1980s by introducing thick, stinky, resinous buds that outperformed traditional sativas in yield and potency, leading to widespread hybridization. It won multiple harvest festivals and is a parent in countless modern strains, from Super Skunk to Cheese and beyond. The story of Skunk#1's connection to SSSC begins when Sam the Skunkman, fleeing potential legal issues in the U.S., relocated to Holland and shared his prized genetics—including the original Haze and Skunk#1—with Karel. SSSC was founded in the mid-1980s in Amsterdam by Karel Schelfhout, a former squatter and pioneer in indoor growing techniques. It was one of the world's first seed banks, following Nevil Schoenmaker's "The Seed Bank."
